The 4th International Conference on Transformations in Educational Sciences aims to discuss the problem currently faced by educational sciences as an outcome of the rapidly changing culture: what will we transmit to future generations? Or rather, perhaps, we should try not to transmit but to create new constructs of knowledge, values and abilities?
In response to the newly emerging momenta, educational policy is creating long-term strategies on the one hand and looking for ways to have the curriculum capture everything that presently matters, on the other. Is it not so that in order to cover everything, we only skim the surface, and while teaching everything, we teach nothing? Finally, we want to assess and equate everyone. Yet, if we stress the fact that we live in the so-called learning as opposed to teaching paradigm, then the question of what should constitute the learning content must come from the bottom up, from the one who learns, not from the top down, i.e. the one who teaches. The problem of bottom and top can be solved by balancing out power relationships, but in the new conditions of education characterised by huge and rapid flows of information, it is becoming very difficult to capture and establish powers among the participants of the educational process. Hence, transmission gets slowly pushed out, and transformation and transversality take their toll in lieu of it in educational environments. Making them positive, creative and successful is a major challenge faced by the policy of education.
