A global world is marked by the growing influence of media, uncontrollable consumerism and marketization of formerly non-market sectors. Continuously increasing migration and more or less successful social and cultural integration of newcomers make evident tensions existing between the policies of multiculturalism and ethnocentrism. These changes taking place in political, social and cultural realities make a tremendous impact on education and cause the need for transformations in it. In a fast changing world, ‘transformation’ becomes one of the most used words as well as ‘globalization’, ‘media’, and ‘technologies’. ‘Transformations’ become an oxymoron for the hidden inertia of former educational practices. It encourages us to seek answers to the following questions: What transformations taking place in education could be regarded as consistent and / or how radical can (or should) they be? What is the purpose of transformations in education and who benefits from them?
The transformations that are to be addressed in this conference are seen in two vast deeply interconnected and interdependent fields: in education policy and in culture of education. On the one hand, it can be claimed that global and national policy decisions determine changes in culture of education. On the other hand changing cultural contexts call for new education policies and immediate political decisions, which would address intercultural, multicultural, ethno-cultural education issues. The complexity of transformations in education asks for an interdisciplinary approach from researchers, politicians and practitioners and the necessity of an active academic discussion of experts who would be able to present new insights and a broader view on the issues that affect all the actors of educational field: teachers, educators, students, administrative staff, parents, and politicians.
